Trying to remove the steering box for rebuild and need some advice. What is the best way to remove?
Does the steering column need to be removed?
Should it come out with the pitman arm attached or should I try to remove it from the box before I remove?
Does the box come out the top or bottom?
I'm so confused please someone help with instructions
Doing this right now I had to take it loose from the frame, three bolts took it loose from the ragjoint then all the pullers I could get a hold of would not work because the feet of the pullers would not get between the pitman arm and the box I have headers so it was real close on one side I used a pickle fork on the connection on the control valve two shots and it came off dosen't look like I damaged the valve I removed the box from the top I'm hoping to get it back toghter tomorrow. Good Luck
Remove the (2) ragjoint bolts [identify where they came from...they are different from each other], loosen the upper ragjoint clamp and slide it up on the column shaft, remove the (3) bolts attaching the steering box to the frame (one stays in the frame as it can't easily be removed), and remove the steering box.
Thanks Croaker,
That is exactly what I was looking for . Because I have headers and power brakes I really wasn't sure if it would come out the top or not with the pitman arm attached.
I'm sending mine off to one of the forum members to have it rebuilt .
Thats what I did, just got it back together I'm gonna do a couple other things tomorrow while it's up in the air I had to look all over for the 1 5/16" socket all the part stores stopped at 1 1/4" wound up at the John Deere place they robbed it from a set
When you have it out it's a good time to rebuild the lower steering column, do any work to the brake lines and proportioning valve, power steering lines, power brake booster and master cylinder. All these parts get in the way of the other and it is easy to do them all at the sametime versus working around each other and doing them one at a time. If you sending the gear box to Gary R.--he did mine and does great work.
