Default 69 Ignition Shields

Anyone have a link that shows the ignition shields installed in detail? I bought a set from Paragon and I can't figure out how they mount?

Help!!!

Now, doesn't that look like fun? Insert tab 'A' into slot 'B'....no, that's the kids Christmas toys....

Seriously, if you didn't remove them, having that diagram is helpful, but that job is still a real PITA with the engine in the car. Good luck.

WOW. Once again I'm impressed!! Wilcox didn't sell you the parts but they still are happy to supply installation details. With all the kudos given to them I think they deserve even more.

Thanks Wilcox for all your support and service!!!!!

I still don't see how these parts can go in with the engine installed? Has anyone ever done that?

Yes! I’ll try to help you further: Go by you some band aides first! A must!

You have to bolt the L brackets to the manifolds first. When you do this you want to test fit the shield before you snug the bolts down. Do this one shield (two brackets at a time).

Once you have the L brackets in place you then install the side horizontal shields by installing the wing bolts.

The lower V shield is a little trickier than the sides. On the V shield, it is exactly what it I’ve called it. It will only install one way. The back side slips under the bolt for the J heat shield (You do have this in place I hope) for the spark plugs. The front bracket on the V shield goes under the front bolt for the J shield.

So once you have the V-shield and the brackets installed you can then mount the side shields. I’ll assume this is what you are having problems with. If you run in to problems on the vertical shields post again.

I may have some pictures from when I restored a 71 14 years ago, I’ll have to look. I did a 63 body off in 1993 and a 71 in 1995 but I don’t know if the pictures are on the computer or on paper. If I find some I’ll post them for you. Maybe in the interim someone else will post some for you.

The diagram does not really show the clamps, that is why a picture would be worth a thousand words!

I'm not sure what you mean by clamps.

There are two front clips off the front of the oil pan that hold two wires, there are two clips off the bottom of the rear J shield that hold two wires as well.

The L brackets utilize the exhaust manifold bolts.

The J shields (not shown in the picture) bolt to holes in the block.

Once the L brackets are installed you need to install the V shields and wires.

Once the V shields are installed you install the side horizontal shields.

On the rear of the block there are two vertical shields that attach to the upper box with wing bolts and there are two lower supports that screw to the holes in the back of the block.

I’ll see if I can get you a picture of the actual parts installed. However, this may not be easy due to the fact that when the shields are installed you can’t see the brackets or how they install. . . . Let me see what I can do for you tomorrow.

A rare moment that I can not come thru for you! We have a 69 in the shop and I raised it up in the air to take pictures but. . . The only shields on the car are the J shields.

I'll keep looking, but I think if you take your time and use the assemlby manual as a guide you can figure this out.

Willcox. . .

Maybe someone will post some pictures.

Default Ignition Shield Photos for 69

My kit came with several style L brakets. I guess I'm trying to figure out which ones go in each location.

Wow, this is an old post.... I've already posted the AIM pic.

Let me see if I can find some real pics. I don't know if I have any on this machine.

I assume these are the brackets you are having trouble with.

If I remember correctly... And someone correct me if I'm wrong. The straight brackets are to be in the outer most position and the others are the inners. You should be able to bolt the brackets to the shield and hold it over the exhaust manifold and see which way they line up.

I'll keep looking for an installed picture too!

If you look at the picture above!

The straight brackets are number 2, the bent brackets are numbers 3 and 4. In the picture it shows number 4 being the same on the passenger side, this is wrong. Only one left bend and only one right bend bracket per side.

So, with this in mind take the straight brackets and bolt them to the outer edges of the lower shields and see which angle bracket makes it line up with the manifold bolts. I'll keep looking, but I've not found an engine shot that shows them.

Thanks- turns out what I didn't know was that the brackets (in your picture) were already attached in the illustration picture. I figured this out and then I concluded that the labeling of the brackets was also incorrect because there were 4 straight brackets and the illustration didi not have 4 of any number 2,3,or 4) . I'v got all the shields installed except the left front. Can't seem to get that one on with the steering box and other interference issues. I'm sure I'll get it again next time I go out to work on the car. I'm going to take some pictures as I install the shields and document that in a memeo to distribute. Thanks again and I will be buying the next parts I need from Willcox Corvette.
