I used to use a fuel system cleaner from a big name manufacturer that came in a black metal bottle about 8" high and 2-1/2" in diameter. I don't see that container on the shelves at the auto parts stores anymore and I can't remember if it was made by Castrol or someone else.
The reason I would like to find it again was because I KNOW it worked!! I used to own an '85 Nissan pickup that I ran two bottle's of this cleaner through just before the head gasket was replaced. I was talking to the mechanic on the phone and he said he had never seen anything like it and wanted to know what I had done.
When he removed the head there was no carbon in the combustion chambers or on the pistons. I went to the shop and also noticed that the intake manifold runners were actually shiny! The insides of those runners looked brand new. Every bit of carbon was gone!
Anyone know what this was? Do you have a similar story about a fuel system cleaner that you have hard evidence to recommend?

Techron is in a black plastic bottle. I use it in my Z06 about every 4th tank of gas. It is supposedly a fuel system cleaner but I use it because it supposedly cleans the deposits off of the fuel sending unit helps keep it working correctly.
Well, I'm not sure what product you had in mind...but I can't imagine it being any better than Seafoam. Great stuff..whether you have a carb or fuel injection.
I use Seafoam too. However, I because I have never had the misfortune of having an engine dismantled shortly after its use as with the mystery product in the black metal bottle, I have never known for sure how much good it did.
What I am looking for is a fuel system cleaner with hard documented proof of its effectiveness.
Mike, I share your skepticism. If I had not seen the inside of that Nissan engine I would not have thought it was possible. That is why I am still hoping someone will remember the fuel system cleaner in the black metal bottle. I know that was worth every penny I spent and I will buy it again in a heartbeat.
The last time I could find it was probably about 3-4 years ago. It may still be available just in a different package.
