My 1969 Corvette 350/350 lost its gas pedal while driving. To my surprise the rod which connects the gas pedal to the throttle cable was severly bent. I ordered a replacement rod, but to my dismay it didn't work as it appears the cable is too short to work properly.
My problem now is what to do about it. It appears I have the correct pedal, rod and bracket from a 69 but when I installed the new rod, the pedal is almost against the underside of the dash. The cable appears to be too short which won't allow the pedal to be depressed properly causing the rod to bend if forced. I can only assume the previous owner did something wrong or put something in that isn't supposed to be there...is the cable for a 68 shorter than the one for a 69 is one of my questions.
Can anyone help or advise the best route to take as our local Corvette store refers to the set up for my 69 as a 68. The 68 is a three piece unit the 69 isn't.
You can buy a new cable but before you do see about adjusting the cable by clamping the sleeve at a different location at the carb bracket or using one of several ball stud holes at the carb linkage. When all is said and done, be sure you have full travel from idle to WOT with only a slight amount of linkage travel remaining to WOT to prevent strain on the cable at WOT.
The AIM will show you the correct parts in the assembly.
Thanks for the reply and once the entire assembly was removed I discovered my 69 Corvette has a 68 throttle asembly...which the previous owner simply bent to make it work. When I purchased the car, I didn't know any of this and when driving it the the entire thing came apart further adding to the delimma. I installed a complete new 1969 assembly and the car is fixed....thanks.
During the replacement make sure you use a new clip that attaches the cable to the gas pedal rod. They are made of plastic and are known to fail. Since your under there take the time and do it.
