Hi

Get this one http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku on sale now.
I installed it to my BB and it cranks like hell.
Some friends have it already for 10 years in their SB stroker and never gives up.
Unbeatable price.

GM starters historically ware out and as they do they operate intermittently. I is usually the brushes wearing out and stop making contact. In the old day we would reach under and hit the starter with a hammer or something heavy jaring the brushes and it would work again for a while and give us time before we would have to fix it. If you connect a test light to the small soleniod terminal near the block side and turn the key to the start position and it lights it will eliminate the ignition circuit and narrowing it down to the starter. There are still guys out there that will rebuild your starter if you worried about keeping your original starter you just have to hunt for one.

This could be a bad starter or solenoid, but when your starter goes bad you usually hear at least "click", and nothing happens. If you have no click at all, it could be your neutral safety switch is bad. I'm assuming your car is a '78 based on your screen name. Do you have auto or stick? Can you give more information about how/when this happens? Happens only when engine is warm? Came about suddenly and now you can't start the car at all? More information would be a big help to diagnosis.

When it is warm and this is happening leave the door open so the dome light is on. Try to crank it up. If the dome light really dims down then the starter is toast. If the light does not dim then it is probably the neutral switch. My bet is the starter though.
