Default Engine knocking

My engine developed a knock. When I start it, it's loud then quiets down but dose not go away. The knocking races with the engine when I step on the gas. Standing over the engine it sounds to be on the driver side. When I stand behind the car the driver side exhaust dose not sound right. When the car sits the lifters always made noise when started up but always goes away. This kind of sounds like that put only on one side.
Were do I start to determine what's wrong.

Is the knocking sound like a clunking or tapping? A tapping type noise would be valve train or exhaust leak noise. A deeper clunking would relate to rods or mains. If you can post a video and link it here it would help.

Opened valve covers and looks OK.
Sounds like tapping.
Pulled the plugs all good except #3 cylinder. The plug was black and there was no gap, like something hit it closed but did not brake the plug.
I put in a new plug and started it up. It is allot better but still dose not seam right.

That is a short reach plug isn't it? I was thinking a long reach may have been installed
