Default 75 Telescopic Wheel doesn't lock

I need to know if there is someone out there with a diagram of how the telescopic steering wheel works. I can't get mine to lock at all and driving it is very hard.I had someone look at it and I think something may be missing. Please any info would be great.

Yep.

www.corvettefaq.com

Look for Jim Shea's articles on steering. If it's not there in his articles, it doesn't exist.

That site helps out alot but it doesn't explain exactly how the telescopic lock works and by the pictures he has they don't show any of the parts either. Any other help would be great. Thanks in advance.

There is a "star" screw in the center of the column once you remove the outer components. It has a couple of small Phillips head screws holding it in place. The lock mechanism works off that screw. If it won't tighten up, you have to remove the retaining screws, rotate that star screw (w/large Phillips-head drive) a bit, and re-insert the retaining screws. Then try it to see if you improved it. Keep adjusting it until you get the telescoping portion to lock up properly.

I did that but it tightens all the way down and still doesn't lock this is why I think there is something missing. Do you know if there is anything below that star screw?

There should be a rod 4.30 inches long by 0.22 diameter underneath your star screw. If the steering wheel is removed from the column and the column is removed from the car it can easily fall out and go unnoticed.

All this info is in my Tilt & Telescoping Column Disassembly & Repair Paper #1.
