Default Seam in the front door jambs

I am trying to address a seam in the front door jambs of a C3… more specifically, forward of the hinges and it is vertical and goes from the bottom of the fender to the top of the fender. It's not the fender, but more of a cowl assembly component. The gap pretty much splits the front door jamb area.

I want to seal this area – should I use an adhesive or a sealer? And which type?

Thanks

That sounds like the front pillar cover and I would use some body seam sealer that you can get from your local body shop supply store.

thanks ....

I just saw your post, but in anticipation I got some 3M seam sealer... dang that stuff is expensive.... $42 for 10oz ish... but I hear its good. I see they gave me clear, but I think I best return and get black.

Harry, 3m seam sealers are paintable.

Hey Al and all...

Thanks - I saw that the seam sealers are paintable. I was just trying to decipher from 3M which one was right.... and still confirm whether adhesive or sealer is appropriate.

Scott - I looked up the Front Pillar Cover in my AIM database and no bueno.. maybe another name\? But I am thinking it is more a cowl or fender seam. I have attached a pic (see below).

FYI - I got 3M clear Flexible Seam Sealer ($17) for 1/10 gal, but I am not convinced it is correct for the application. As it does have slight shrinkage. Other products state that they have no shrinkage and that is prolly what I need.

And just to beat this horse to death, please see related posting I made a while back. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/pain...to-repair.html

Thanks Gents.....

Normally the seam you have the arrows pointing to would have some of the excess bonding adhesive squeezed out along that joint as that is what was used to bond the firewall to the birdcage along the front of the cage there.

Here you can see the seam on mine after I have bonded the firewall back on to the birdcage with the fusor adhesive just starting to squeeze out some. There is also two rivets that go through the front side of the firewall kitty corner to that seam to help hold the firewall to the cage. In my opinion that particular seam is not likely to be the cause of to many leaks and would not concern me as mush as the other areas you indicate in your previous post. There are more leak prone seams along the firewall that I would be concerned about like the top of the firewall in your pics is a good candidate for a leak if not rusted and pulled away you can put some fresh seam sealer there to help.

I see the LORD Fuser Auto Repair Adhesives. Did you use the 141 Clear Adhesive? I assume the LORD product you used is very similar to a 3M product. Also – did you intend on posting a pic?

I revisited the ’69 AIM to see if I could get a better grip on the components and how they are assembled. I found the outer hinge pillar on J44 and ultimately J58 and J59 have the pictures of the Plenum Side Panel and Sill Extensions I believe I am looking for. J-147 shows a good view as well, but between all of these pics, I could not find the specific instruction on whether to use adhesive, Plastisol Sealer or Seam Sealers in these areas.

Last, with my link to my previous post, there are 2 areas of concern – the wiper/cowl area and then the door jambs. Is the consensus to use Seam Sealer at both areas, or is adhesive indeed required in the wiper/cowl area?

I am ready to get after it tonight after work...
