I've got my motor built except for putting on the intake manifold and
I've hit a bit of a snag.
I'm using sportsman II 64cc heads, and the stock intake manifold.
However, the intake manifold has some sort of metal tube portruding
through one of the holes and it is meant to go into the head. However,
it is too long for the new heads. My question is, what the heck is the stupid
thing and can I remove it so that I won't need to buy a new intake manifold?
If you are saying center of right (pass.) side of manifold, a loop, that is the choke tube for carb. If so, then yes, you could remove from top right of manifold or make shorter.
If you are using Sportman heads they usually have the exhaust crossover blocked off. The hot air choke system on the carb is not going to work properly. You might want to consider investing in a new intake/carb combo. Something like en edelbrock performer carb/intake setup will run you about $300 new. If you dont want to do that I would get a block off plate and convert the car to an electric choke. Edelbrock does sell a plate to do that here : http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/install2.html
