My '78 was missing the rubber clutch pedal bumper which let the clutch pedal set too high, well above the brake and AIM spec.
Prior to installing the bumper the adjustment nut was as far out (towards the end) as possible. After the bumper it has ~5/8" of thread showing. I had to use the inner (rear) nut to get it down to only that position.
I now have a slight whine noise which I am assuming is the throw out bearing still having some pressure on it. I also have zero free play in the pedal at the top.
The question is... Should I adjust per the AIM to get the free play? If so what are the chances that I then won't have enough travel to completely disengage the clutch?
Install the bumper and get the pedal to the right position.
In the interim, adjust the clutch to have the clutch engage at about 1 1/2 inches above the floor. Unfortunately, this will give you a LOT of freeplay, but at least you won't overstress the diaphragm pressure plate spring.
probably the reason the bumper was missing in the first place was to provide free play...sounds loke you may need a longer rod from the pedal to the z bar or new bushings in the pedals.....always have at least one inch at the pedal....you could leave the bumper out until the clutch wears in and then re adjust then install the bumper
