Default Big engine related mess..

Adding to my list of miseries is this fateful one.. I heard I knocking from a cylinder, which in coincidentally led to a gas leak to the carb, which in coincidentally led me to the PVC pipe under the gas intake being dry rotted out and broken..

So.. I replaced the gas filter (because the line has small black pellets of something in it from the gas tank sitting so long), found out that the nut that holds in the gas filter is stripped on the carb so I guess I need it either re threaded (doubtful that I'll find a carb shop anywhere), or buy a new carb, and to make matters worse when I turn the car on smoke pours out of the air intake and I can't give it any gas without it stalling out then really motoring for a second..

I would tell you the speed I go but the speedo is broken as well, it does make a little clicking noise but I don't know what to do about that. New 70' cable but don't know what to do there.

In a nut shell, how screwed am I? Where should I start?

All minor stuff. Nothing that cannot be fixed. The stripped carb might be able to be fixed depending on the severity of the stripped threads. The speedo is no problem either. Sounds like you might have a timing issue with it also. Nothing a good tune up can't fix. Step back take a deep breath and tackle one job at a time. Ask for assistance here if needed.

Oh I do, frequently. Mostly a rant of the 6 things that self destructed on me in about 5 minutes today. Where should I start? I didn't mess with the timing before and it worked a week ago although it was doing something similar but fixed it self a few weeks ago..

It sounds like your engine is pinging due to a too advanced timing, that would be too dangerous for your engine. Get a timing light and set your timing correctly.

Thanks for the help, it's not getting run very hard so I'm not that worried about blowing it up yet, but thanks for the help. How can the timing get thrown off? I don't even know how I could mess with it other then putting in new plugs and wires.

Btw I have no clue on how to fix timing, any good reads?

First fix fuel leak/stripped inlet port. Self tapping or oversize inlets are available. check with autozone or checker or even Holley themselves.
You have a 70 foot cable Here's the fix if you have a new inner cable,if you dont have one order one from a supplier.
Un-clip speedo cable from rear of speedo head, from the end you just disconnected gently pull inner cable from outer housing. At the trans end you should see about 1.5" of squared off cable end. If not you'll need to disconnect trans end of the housing and remove broken section.
Check the input end of the speedo head for a broken piece still stuck in the speedo. Now place all broken bits in a line and cut new cable to the same length.
Llightly grease new cable with some bearing grease.
Install newly cut (if necessary) cable into outer cable housing from the top down.
finish by reclipping cable to speedo head

Lol yes 70 ft. Meant to put inch but must have messed up. But yes, I did those steps. Originally when I started all that was left was the lower cable and part of the upper going towards dash. I replaced top cable and nothing happened so I took off lower cable and the end in the transmission was sheered off and the rest was rusted shut. So I used the 1 piece cable but now the speedo needle bounces and doesn't read correctly. The white milage counter also is reading the miles very short and isn't counting right and the black doesn't add any miles. There's also a clicking coming from the speedo I noticed.

Can someone give me more info on the timing thing please? I've read the sticky and have no clue still. Why would this happen just out of the blue?????

Bump. Could I need a new rotor button? Also need more info on that carb problem too, what part should I use for that? I really don't want to buy a new carb.. and I want to check and see if carbon build up is a problem for that cylinder that's detonating..
