Quick Chrome Bumper Question(s)
Quick question(s) I removed my 70 headlights to refurbish. I ended up removing my front bumper. The bumper is attched at four points; two bolts in the front and one in each corner. Are the bolts in the front supposed to be standard bolts/ Mine are kind of weird with bolts inside a bulb like weights, which do not match each other. The AIM seems to indicate four normal botls with washers. I am missing one corner bokt and the other corner has a long screw. I am wondering if bubba has had his way.
The AIM also shows a shim(s) in each corner. Is there only one shim per conrner or more than one? Need to figure out how many to buy.
Thanks!
The outer bolts was also a standard bolt, but only a lock washer was used.
The shims on the front outer edge were “as required” to obtain the proper fit as outlined in the checking dimension in UPC 11-13. This dimension was listed as .48 - .52 between the forward edge of the upper surround panel and the inner edge of the bumper.
The change in bolts is quite common since tons of people try to install the bumpers in different manners. Some try to start in the middle with longer bolts to allow pulling down of the bumper after the outer edge bolts are installed. Usually this is due to not shimming the outer ends of the bumper. Lack of shimming causes fitment problems but often body modifications can also cause problems too!
These front bumpers can be a rear PITA to install that’s for sure. My 70 has the original bumper on it and we fought it for hours when we put it on the car years ago. Shims or no shims it was difficult.
