Default Spare tire and Jack

I was wondering how many people carry a spare? I never put mine back after rebuilding the suspension. This weekend I ran over some kind of **** thing with a screw in it. I was 6 miles from home and it was late. the think was leaking very slow. The first problem I had was there is only 5 1/2" clearance under the frame in front of the tire. If it went flat no room for a jack. I limped home at 2 mph " 1 hour later" and got lucky. I started thinking what about the next time?

I don't. Fix a Flat, AAA card and a cell phone. My rear tires would not fit in the tire carrier anyway.

I dropped my tank and the only thing that went in the car was a can of fix-a-flat.

Fix-a-Flat, no spare, no jack, no carrier.

This was discussed over on the NCRS board and a gentleman said the spare tire was part of the rear end crash protection. In the event of a severe rear end collision, the spare would be shoved against the rear end and help protect the gas tank.
I didn't measure mine or check any angles, but he sure seemed to know what he was talking about.

My spare is in there, but it's worthless.

It's the orignal, so I tried to put air in it, and leaked our around the bead.

I carry my cell phone, and have the towing opition through Hagerty's.

I have owned my 69 for 7 years. I have never looked for the spare tire and I saw the jack for the first time last week. I did'nt even know where it was until I pulled out the box for cleaning that the jack sits under. I was surprised to see the jack there. In my defense, I have driven less than 500mi. since I purchased the vette. The last time before last month was almost 3 years ago.

Yes, new tire, just in case in our '77. We take several trips on back county roads from Toronto to Ottawa (5 hrs each way). Have of course the CAA and cell but the area does not have many stations which would have the two truck and repair facilities.

I absolutely carry a spare along with my cell and AAA card. However I'd rather not have my car towed for a simple flat tire....I also don't like the way the rear looks without the tire carrier.

I can bareley get my car in the driveway without scraping the front rubber. imagine a flat tire and having some bubba in his "bling bling" rolloff pulling up. first thing he does is pull out them meat hooks. "your gonna put them where?" somebody mentioned the inflatable bag thing from the exhaust pipe. maybe call home and have them bring a spare? maybe putting one of those emergency spaares under the rear. ugly!

I use the spare tire carrier, wheel/tire, and jack because the weight brings the rear ride height down about a 1/4".

Alan

Yep, Peace of mind knowing I can change the tire and be on my way in less than 15 minutes and not have to have to go look for a shop that can fix a flat. I keep a spare water pump belt in there too.
