The potential problem with that type of air cleaner is if you have a backfire, it could set the hood insulation alight, or at least leave a spot of soot on the underside of your hood. I don't know how likely that scenario is, but there is that potential. Personally, I think that type of air cleaner lid should be reserved for open hood street rods.
Your carburetor only needs so much air flowing to it...adding that air cleaner lid doesn't really add real world performance if your primary air filter element is flowing sufficient air already. It looks good, but really doesn't do much beyond that.
I used the K&N air filter top for quite some time, but changed to the "bubble" solid top shown below in the picture after some dyno comparisons......the solid one in the pic gives 5 more horsepower than the open one at all rpms on both big block and small block applications. (We dynoed 4 engines on "dyno day", and got the same results on all.)
That looks like a 73 or 74 with cowl induction air filter assembly. The round filter element is 2" tall and 12" in diameter. Rather small. I would think that this would be an improvement to the stock set up.

Stroker, does that aircleaner leave room between it and the distributor cap? Is it an offset base? I'm installing the same distributor and my 14" drop base air cleaner doesn't leave enough room at the new distributor

I'm using an HEI, and I had to slightly bend the base (about 1/4") inward and slightly upward to clear the distributor cap. It's a regular base, not offset. Look closely at the pic....it's hardly noticeable unless you look close from behind.

Has anyone tried using an air filter made into the air cleaner top? Is this of any value?
Roger
When I purchased my 73, a previous owner had removed the cowl induction air cleaner and installed one of those K&N XStream air filter assemblies that has a top like that on it. For starters, it wasn't stock, and it obviously negated any benefit of cold air from cowl induction hood, so I removed it and spent 3 years trying to find the right adapter ring for a stock 454 air cleaner... LOL Good luck on that one. The 350 ring will fit, it just isn't "correct". I actually finally did see one of the offset 454 rings in person, so I know they exist.
But... after driving it with the K&N XStream and then driving it with the stock cowl induction setup, I'd pick the stock one purely because I didn't like listening to that horrendous constant sucking noise the K&N made. As for performance... give me a break... LOL If I wanted performance, I'd just go buy a new Honda Accord with a V6 and blow the doors off most any C3. The last reason I'd buy an old Corvette is to see how fast I could make it go. I love what it makes me remember from 40 years ago
