Thanks, I have a cam(XE262h) and exhaust. I was looking at a 2400 stall. Would that be too high? The engine has a rough idle when it is in gear and I can't find any vacuum leaks. The engine also hiccups a little at about 1500 and I was thinking thats because that is where the cam kicks in. Would a high stall converter help with these symptoms?
A good 2400 stall will not feel any different than stock. Its probably not needed though.
Cams dont really "kick in" the way you are thinking. They just have a range where they are the most efficient.
It sounds like you just have some tuning issues.
When I first put the stroker in my '76, I had just rebuilt the trans about six months before. So I popped the motor in, and wow I've never been so disappointed! The thing just would NOT launch. Even with three times the power of the orig motor.
I went back to the trans shop & asked for advice. They recommended a 2500-2800 range stall convertor & I had them put it in. I've never looked back. Lots more mods have been done to the engine since then but man, it still launches like a bullet.
The convertor seems a bit slippery around town but it locks up by the time I'm at freeway speeds or before. When I want to launch her, I don't need to brake-torque it by holding the brakes & revving the motor up. When I say GO, it just burns rubber ... whenever I wish.
The stall convertor also makes a hard-shifting transmission that's been reprogrammed, seem to shift a bit easier. It takes some of the kick out of the 1-2 shift on my Turbo 350.
