Default Power Window

The passenger side window on my 79 doesn't work. The motor runs but the window doesn't move. I can move it about an inch by hand, down from full up.
I have removed the door panel but can't see how to access the window operator.
I have been told my a local mechanic that it is not a job for a novice like me.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Or if I should even try?
Thanks,
Ken

Sounds like you have some teeth missing from the window regulator. Here on the forum are some good directions on how to replace the regulator. The regulator does have a big spring and if you dont follow the instructions you can get hurt. The arms act like a large pair of scissors. The job is not too bad.

If you feel confident enough to tackle the job then go for it. There is a wealth of info on this forum and there is a link on the corvette magazine web page on C3 window repair. The teeth on the regulator gear may be stripped. The access hole is covered by a metal plate which will allow to access the regulator. Be sure to keep your hands from between the regulator scissors and the horizontal track, should the glass fall, you will have a very painful trip to the hospital and could lose fingers!!! That being said it is not a difficult job. Other will chime in soon and add thing I have missed or correct me if I'm wrong.

Mostly agree with DWncchs that you may have some teeth missing. Also, my passenger window stopped going up due to mis-alignment of the tracks. The job can be done with basic mechanical skills and the information available here.

i agree with dwnnchs as well about most likely stripped teeth and old guard has a good tip about keeping your fingers- be carefull where you stick them. once you strip out all the possible access spots on the door you can do anything in there. it is tight but its all achievable. i hate to think how many times i have removed the insides of my door completely for reasons like new glass, tinting, glass regulator, paint etc etc. what did take me half a day and 12 beers the first time, i can now hammer in 1-2 hours.

normally if it is teeth missing you can give the window a little helping hand till it grabs a tooth and gets going. normally the first few teeth and the last few teeth on the part go first.i would recommend the part in the picture before doing a full rebuild of the spring. its simple , effective and works great. if this part strips out many years down the track then just replace it again.all the vendors sell it.

once u have done this job once you will be able to do things over and over again without having to pay anyone. my advice is before you start remove the cover that oldguard mentioned and get a camera. take alot of photos of weird angles. take pics down from the top of the door as well. take them of anything and everything cause there is alot of parts so pay attention when you remove things and the order. taking out a regulator is tight and needs a few things to be loose but not removed to get it out. you should be able to see the condition of your teeth without taking any parts from the door except that one metal cover.

Hi everyone, i'm new here. OMG what a god send this place is. I was looking at buying a 1982 Vette and guess what the LH Window Regulator has teeth issues.

Would someone be so kind as to give a link on how to remove and replace a power window regulator in a '82 Vette. I tried to find it in the C3 forums but was unable to. Thanks so much.
