Any tips to make this go relatively easy? I have a kink in my shifter cable and it needs to be replaced. It wasn't a surprise as I recently had a slight problem with the shifter/cable where it didn't want to go into Park after a cruise one day. I persuaded it back into Park and everything was fine again until yesterday. This time it wouldn't come out of gear. It won't go lower down in gear nor will it go into Neutral or Park. The weird and very scary thing (thank God I always put my foot on the brake when I start it up) is that the car will start up in gear! I thought, maybe incorrectly, that the car wasn't supposed to start in gear. Anyway, I took the shifter console off and found that the cable is kinked and the cable "sheath" has come out of the mount.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but to replace it I'm assuming that I remove the cable, slide the shifter into Park and reconnect the new cable.
I replaced mine while I had the console apart. It is not a hard job. The worst part is taking the console apart. I purchased mine at autozone they had it in stock. The only adjustment if I remember correctly is down on the transmission there is a slotted bolt which all I did was have the transmission lever and shifter lever in park and tighten up the bolt.
Check your engine to frame grounds- I know you said you had a kink in the shift cable, but a known problem is that if the existing ground is a bit "iffy" the current will travel the easiest path- thru the shift cable. And that current has been known to make a shift cable a solid part.
Thanks TimAT. You're the second person to tell me to check the frame grounds. I will tonight after work. I ordered the cable assembly through NAPA and it won't be in for three days so I have the time to take a look. Thanks again for everyone's help - much appreciated.
