Default Differential drain plug

I have my differential apart and was wondering if anyone drilled and tapped a plug for it? I did this on my Muncie 20 years ago and tapped it for a 1/8" pipe plug. I have an old article from the 70's on retrofitting a 12 bolt into a vette housing and they said to tap 1" from the spring pad. I not sure that it's necessary for a street car or not. Any comments?

When I swaped in my new gears I added a drain plug to my diff housing. I drilled a 3/8 diameter hole in the housing 4" behind the pinion seal. Tapped it and fitted it with brass plug. I used teflon tape to seal the threads. It made for a quick drain when I needed to change the gear oil after R/P break in.

I drilled and tapped my cover plate with 1/4 npt just in front of the spring mounting pad. The spring does block this location but I usually pull my spring every winter so for me it is no big deal.

I think this is a good idea and the factory should have done it. Especially since the cover is not easily loosened to drain the oil on our cars.

I recently used the turkey baster method. Took about 1 1/4 hrs just to get the black gook out and a torn miniscus. Been in pain ever since and am considering surgery.

bl75vette, for about $9, you can get one of those lube pumps for boat lower units and put a 3/8" flexible rubber hoses on it with the end slash cut and you'll get 95% for the rear end fluid out in about 4 minutes. Best little pump I've ever owned-use it for both the boat and the Corvettes!!! :yesnod:
