Strange Stereo Interference w/HEI

I just upgraded to an HEI in my '69 and now I've got a sound system interference problem.
Engine running, it sounds like the speaker connections are loose most of the time. NOTHING from the speakers 90% of the time and every so often the sound cuts back in for a fraction of a second. And when I say nothing, I mean NOTHING. No ignition whine, no static, just silence. And it's not a radio problem either. Happens regardless of which input I'm using. AM/FM/USB doesn't matter.
Cruise along and turn the key back enough to kill the engine and the sound comes back on. Pup the clutch to restart and it goes away. I'm perplexed.
It's an MSD Streetfire distributor with Accel spiral-core wires. Kenwood Excelon 591 radio.

Ithink I'm going to isolate the stereo from the car with an external 12V power supply to see if that makes any difference. My hopes are not high though.
Any ideas?

Dave
