Mine doesn't work, of course I haven't adjusted it so who knows. I just don't use it.
As for emergency brake vs parking brake, you have to go a lot further back then the 60s or 70s to find the term emergency brake or E-brake as it was called. I think the term changed sometime in the 40s or 50s (maybe) though most of the old guys still use the term e-brake.
On my old car, the brake worked, but not well, so when I had the wheels calipers and rotors off on a main brake project, I went the extra mile and rebuilt the e-brake. It worked perfectly then, and still worked when I sold the car.
On the car I have now, it works, and actually fairly well. It is all the way at the end of its travel though, so I need to do something about that, but it definitely works.
Current score..........yes-7

pending.......................1
By the way, this started as a warning the NJ DMV had started a crack down on non or weak working HAND BRAKES........
As I stated, my 77 failed because it would not hold well.....
This is the first time it failed although it really never worked well!!!
The poll and comments are meant to enlighten everyone of the encroachment of the government..
I know it was called an emergency brake when I first started to drive(1959)......However, it still would be a disaster if I had to use it as a LAST resort.

Reason: recount
Mine works quite well and has for years. GM would not have put something out if it did not work to well. If it is adjusted correctly and all the parts are good it should work OK
X2 I agree, a simple adjustment is all that is required for proper function of this item.
Mine is currently working. If you would have asked a month ago it would have been a deffinent no, and had'nt worked in several years. It works now because we woved the clamps on the control arms becuase my slicks were touching.
X2 I agree, a simple adjustment is all that is required for proper function of this item.
Me too! If your PARKING brake is fitted with correct, working parts, and it is adjusted correctly, it will hold your car on a hill. As stated previously, it is not an emergency brake. It will not stop your car. It will perform its intended function; hold your car from rolling on a hill - a pretty steep hill at that.
as noted above...mine will hold the car from rolling, thus the term "parking brake", but to use it as an emergency brake it would not do the job, also as stated above, it would be too late!
also, with AT plates in VA no inspection is required...thankful, as i have not yet re-done the vacuum system and have to manualy open the headlights, and don't drive it in the rain especially since the wipers do not work.

The parking brake works on our '76. Manual trans car, so the brake is a must have item. One last item on the list to get working and that is the windshield washer pump. Everything else functions well.
