Default Inspection Warning!!!!!

All you NJ Guys be on the lookout for the DMV to check if the parking brake holds to pass inspection.
In prior years the car never failed because of the parking brake.
The problem was always emissions. This year it failed because of both!!
In my discussion with the inspector I joked the car always failed for emissions and the parking brake never worked and probably never will!!
At least private inspection stations are more forgiving.........
A minor adjustment and the proper fee will give you 2 more years of enjoyment.....
HAVE A GREAT MEMORIAL WEEKEND........DRIVE WITH CARE.....:

In the old cars, I believe it was considered a parking brake not an emergency brake, they take that all into consideration???

Default Inspection Warning

Parking brake, I believe is a newer term.

In the 50's & 60's it was emergency brake.

In any case, whatever you call it, it must hold car.

No consideration for age at this time by DMV.

In Mass. the check for the E-brake is to put the car in gear and try to accelerate with the brake on. An automatic trans will bog the engine down a bit and a manual trans should stall the engine.

In the past I always put the car in the highest gear to make sure it would stall. Starting out in 5th gear pretty much insures a stall even if the brake is not set. If they check the Vette I'll put it in 6th even though I have all new E-brake hardware.

Just for the record, the 1969 Owner's Manual refers to it as a Parking Brake - pg. 22.

Yup... just got back from NJ inspection. Everything passed including emissions but they failed me for the parking brake.

In the past they were not so strict. It has been at least 16 yrs since I looked into it and if I remember it was a real pain to fix.

Even with new parts I dont think these ever really worked that well.

Does anyone have one that works?

As far as I can remember, they have always checked my parking brake. I had an Eldorado back in the '80's that failed for it not working.

Default Inspection warning

I believe the NEW policy for the BRAKE BETWEEN THE SEATS is due

to a crack down on older vehicles.....(less safe?)..

In a more appreciative time the small fact the BRAKE did not work in a

car with an automatic transmission really did not matter(It still has little

relevance).

Most of the experienced inspectors ignored the BRAKE because the knew

so many did not work and it made no difference as far as a safety issue

If you had to use that brake to stop it was too late!!!!!!

Mine works quite well and has for years. GM would not have put something out if it did not work to well. If it is adjusted correctly and all the parts are good it should work OK

I would bet more work than don't! I have had a handful of C3's over the last 35 years, and all had working parking brakes. I did replace the cables on one, the rest were fine as is.

Look, the ~5" drums are not enough to hold any car on any significant slope,...period.....

to those that actually work, fine, have fun....

out of some 2 dzn sharks/m-y's only the drum brake ones hold, disc brake with small drum do no hold....

and to use any SS shoes is a huge mistake....

have fun trying to fix them.....

Mine work just fine. I worked in San Francisco for several years when I first had the car. I never had a problem with the parking brake on the hills there, so that must be some kind of good endorsement.

The parking brake parts were replaced when I had my TAs rebuilt, and I replaced both cables shortly after that. I adjusted per the Chassis Service Manual - it still holds the car on hills.

Cheers,
Pete

I did not say they work very well, they are pathetic as far as bringing the car to a halt. I do have a slightly sloped driveway and it will hold the car on that. I would not want to stand behind it on a steep incline though. It worked well enough 10 years ago to get me through inspection. Now with the QQ plates inspection is not done.
