The feeler gauge doesn't materially change anything - if you don't have the right feel for when you're at zero lash, you're going to tighten them too far regardless.
*chuckle* I hope there's no hard feelings anywhere There are a lot of ways to skin this particular cat. It's one of those things where everyone has a way they've learned to do it with little tricks and tips - but in the end, there's no way to make it a managed process....you have to learn how to do it by feel as there's really no "reference".
Job one is to ensure the lifter is on the heel of the lobe - frankly this is where I see most mistakes made. I use the companion cylinder method as it's the fastest and easiest.
