Hey guys,
I'm at the point in my rear differential rebuild that I'm trying to interpret patterns. Could you take a look at this and tell me if I need to make further changes?
New Tom's 3.55:1 gears
0.0262" pinion shim
0.227" L shim, 0.2484" R shim
0.005-0.007" backlash, 0.002" ring gear runout
Awesome, thanks Gary. That did the trick. .002 off the pinion was a nudge in the right direction, so I went .004 more and rechecked- I think we have a winner. .0208" pinion shim, 0.2311 on the Left, and 0.2423 on the Right. Backlash is 0.005 - 0.0085".
Mist them with some wd-40 and load the pinion while turning the RG. Looks close, the new bearings may be off 001-002 from where you are now. Be sure you have a snug fit on the side shims, I set them so I need just a little leverage to remove the case. Then when you're done add 005 per side.
Final pattern- Backlash tightened up a bit to 0.0045-0.005.
I got the new bearings installed with the crush sleeve, seal installed (#2 on the outside, engine assembly lube on the lip), yoke installed & torqued (#2 on splines & 20 in-lb with seal, new nut), and the extra .0051" shims loading the carrier. Side bearing cap bolts torqued to 65 ft-lbs (180,000 PSI bolts) with Loctite 271.
