Default intake manifold question?

I 'm in the process of getting my 71 up and running I have
installed a new crate motor. I also have a L-88 hood to clear the air gap intake, it is one of those professinal products. I have decided to run the stock hood I would like to change the intake manifold to something that will fit I have a BG 650 carb any suggestions and part numbers would be great
Thanks Kevin

I believe some people have been able to make an Air Gap fit under a stock hood using a drop base air cleaner. I have a '71 with stock hood and am running an Edelbrock Performer intake. It's their model #2101.

Just get a 1.25" drop base cleaner and have at it.

Other than the performer that can be used with the stock dual snorkel air cleaner, just about everthing else that fits will requires a drop base. I've always used 3" filter elements and you could get by with shorter too, but then space over the choke tower gets real tight. Even with the 3", I prefer carbs with milled choke towers for proper airflow.

When picking an intake, use the height dimensions given. They list front and rear height. Add the two and then divide by 2 for the overall height. In my experience, anything over 4.100" intake height is too high with a 3" element. Also, be very careful with the length of the air cleaner stud and wingnut. You'll run out of room real fast and you don't want it to hit the hood. Ask me how I know

I can give you specific intake recomendations, but need to know more about the rest of the combination to choose something that will work well.

LT-1/BB hood is minimum for hi rise intakes like RPM.

Note: There needs to be at least about 3/4" clearance over the Holley vent tubes

The question is about the 68-72 SB flat hood.

No problem for med. rise hood. 77 L-82 hood, RPM, Holley DP & 3" drop base filter.

That is good advice

I have found that if your carb is siiting level you can cut down on your breather tube height some but a big benefit comes from using a breathe through lid and then getting a break from the amount of airspace needed over top the vent tube.
