Default Help with U-Joints

I know I'm missing something here.

I have a 75 vette and i am trying to change the main shaft U-Joints.
after getting the U-Joint straps off, I can't get it to move.

I have worked on many older chevy's and am use to undoing the back and the yoke would slide in the tranny to remove it.
(I also have a 73 chevelle)

So what step am i missing?

sounds like the bearing cups are poss. stuck in yoke. use large screwdriver to pry between u-joint and yoke and it should come loose. drive shaft should slide into trans. like you said. good luck. mds...

Thank you, that was it.
i just got a bigger screwdriver and it poped right out.
Now comes the fun part, the cups are pretty stuck in there, i'll try to get them pressed out tomorrow.

and this is what i found after pulling it out,
I have a feeling that this could be the cause of that grinding noise i've heard.

after looking at those needle bearings, you should consider replacing all of the u-joints in the half shafts.

glad to see you got it out. What I look for to identify bad needle bearings on u-joints is rusty dust around rubber cup seal. This works best on original, non grease fitting equiped u-joints. If you see the dust the bearings are bad. mds...
