Hey all, I'm looking at almost certainly doing a steeroids rack and pinion conversion while my motor is out as I'm swapping that BB in.
I am considering going to a manual unit to simplify things, one less accessory to drive, less clearance issues.
Can anybody comment on the steering feel/effort of the manual units? The last manual steering car I had was a 69 Chevelle and I seem to remember the only time it was a pain was real slow speed like jockeying in a small parking space or backing out of a tight spot.
i just completed the 2.9 ratio manual rack conversion in my C2 with LS2 engine.. so maybe not a fair comparison since my front end is about 200 lbs lighter now, but steering effort is just fine sitting still in the shop, only one hand needed.
see the LS engine sticky thread, last page 83 for pics.
I've run a Steeroids system for several thousand miles with it un-assisted. My setup is a small block but with wide front tires 265/15's and this was the quick ratio power assisted rack, not the slower manual version. It was just as you said, it took some effort when you were parking but otherwise it felt fine once you were rolling.
