I've been detailing the engine compartment lately. Taking a wire brush to the metal brackets and vacuum canisters really shines them up. I want to keep that look so I'm spraying some Duplicolor CLEAR DE1636 High Temperature paint on the parts to try and seal them and prevent them from oxidizing again. Has anyone tried this?? Will it yellow....am I waisting my time??
Re: Anyone use Clear paint in engine compartment?? (Rods77)
Here's what I did. I used mostly Eastwood paints or Krylon Engine enamels. For all the brackets I bead blasted them first and then coated them with engine primer followed by a coat of either Eastwood Spray Grey or Cast aluminum, depending on the part. I then followed this with a coat of clear engine enamel. The parts look good and they've lasted around 3 years. When I coated bare metal with just a clear coat it tended to oxidize and become cloudy after a while. This was my experience and others may have used other products and had better results. If you want to see what the engine looks like go to my website in my sig. Good luck.

I did the wire brush/clear coat thing on a couple of parts underhood and it worked fine. It's been more than 2 years and those parts still look the same.
Re: Anyone use Clear paint in engine compartment?? (Rods77)
I did this with a new alternator. It didnt last very long ( one cruising season). From now on, I'll do the paint thing. The alt is out now and getting a coat of "Dull Aluminum". Brake master next with "cast iron", etc. Clear didnt seem to stop the oxidation over a 1 year time frame.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.

I'm going to paint my aluminium intake with Tremclad clear coat, just the ordinary kind, I just did my old Performer intake and it does darken it slightly
but still looks good, has not been on a motor yet though.
Someone on the forum said he used the Tremclad clear on his manifold a number of years ago and it still looks good no yellowing etc. :D
Re: Anyone use Clear paint in engine compartment?? (MotorHead)
VHT turns yellow in less than a year :U
Edit;
House of Kolor swears that their clear will not yellow even at high temps.
And if you want it to look really good have it mixed without the UV inhibitor...

I painted my intake manifold with high temp clear coat and it turned yellow and looked horrible. I painted my brakets and repainted my manifold with cast colored paint , I like the look. I have a friend who used hammer tone gray paint and it looked good. I am going to paint my manifold Chevy orange the next time that I have it off.

Ditto with the VHT heatproof paint. It turned yellow on my alum intake and I had to use paint stripper to get it off! :mad I'll never use it on anything that gets hot.
