I just started a complete restoration on a 1980 ,this thing has wiring problems all over the place, after all day running down wires i got most of it fixed.
one thing i ran into was a reproduction power antenna heres what sombody did:
pulled the center consol off and found wires to the rear defrost switch were cut and spliced to another set of wires, and found these wires went to the power antenna.apparently the winsheald got replaced with a non rear defrost window so they used the defrost swith to run the antenna.
they cut the original power antenna wires coming off the power antenna relay.
original power antenna=3 wires to antenna
what i got (its no good)=2wires to antenna
if i replace this power antenna with the two wire and hook it up directly to the radio and switch power, can i just pull the old power antenna wires from the power relay and discard them or will this cause a problem somwhere else?
If you are talking about the factory antenna relay which I believe is mounted under the hand brake cover. If the three wires, (green, gray, white) that went to the original antenna are not being used. I do not see a problem in removing them. As for installing the aftermarket two-wire antenna. I would look at the wiring diagarm for its installation and see if it requires a relay. It depends on how much amp load it takes to operate. Electrical components that have a large amp draw often times require a relay to make them operate (for a better choice of words) safer. Such as an electric fan. Having a switch that breaks the circuit and then completes it does allow the fan to work, but it is safer to have the switch energize and de-energize the relay. That is so the large current/amp load is not going through the switch. Instead it is controlling the relay and the relay is handling the current/amp load.
thanks for the help i checked the wiring diagram on the two wire antenna and it does not require a relay.
one wire goes to radio and the other wire hooks to a 12v ignition so when you turn key on antenna activates.
i will take your advice, but keep relay on shelf for a while to make sure.
have a nice after market radio for this car,i bought this car in pieces pretty much putting it back together total restoration in progress
im buying a two wire antenna so i dont need the relay
If you are using an aftermarket radio and antenna then just run the up and down wire to the antenna control wire on the back of the radio.
You really don't need the relay or the factory schematic with the aftermarket radio and antenna combo. . . Just follow the radio directions and match them to the antenna instructions.
