Default 454 balancer size

what is the correct size of a 454 LS5 balancer. I decided to go ahead and order a new one to replace my beat up one since i have it off anyway.

i got an oem replacement from napa.
it was 8"
the one that came off of it was 7"

the 7" balancers were for the 427 right.
interesting since the car had 427 heads as well.

casting# says that the engine is a 454 like it is supposed to but now i am wondering if i need to order another 427 balancer since there is a difference in balancing right?

will there be an issue with the 8"

First you need to determine if the engine is internal or external balance.
Which was the 7" balancer that you took off?
An external balancer will have extra weight on the inside of the ring.
You might also look at the flexplate or flywheel that is on the engine.
The block could be either, it depends on the crank and balance.
Hope this helps.

The 1965 to 1969, 396 or 427 were all internal balance the 1970 on up 454 were all external balance, 1970s there was a slightly overbored 396, 402 internal balanced. Don't look for 402 emblems on cars chevy had a following dating back to 1965 with the 396 nameplate so they just kept the 396 emblem.

well the cast iron heads on it are from a 66 427.
wierd, i guess the somewhere down the road someone wanted a 427 real bad.

here is a pic of the balancer that came off it it
i am pretty sure it is an internal balanced one.
there are no offset weights or holes drilled in the outer diameter.
just that one dimple on the front

i was going to reuse it since the ring looked ok but was going to change the color.
guess what i found when i stripped the paint off

so i guess i will be getting a new one.

i found one at autozone for a 66 427, standard engine, 427
6.9 inches diameter

it looks from the photos like it is the one i need so heres hoping.
