Default 69 electrical question

While installing new interior parts, and dyeing others, I dropped the steering column down, and pulled the driver side instrument cluster toward me about an inch. Finished what I was doing, put everything back, and now when I put my left turn signal on, front works fine, but both rear turn signal lamps blink. Turn right one on, same thing, both rears blink at the same time. Help would be appreciated.

undo what ever you did, must have pulled or shorted some wiring.
Hate to say it but you most likely will have to pull the cluster to inspect everything,
I would rather stick my hand in an alligators mouth than mess with that wiring cluster.
good luck... 69VETT

I'll tell you what happened to me once. I used the wrong screw (too long) to hold on the trim piece under the steering column and as luck would have it, the screw went right through my new column harness and short it out. Worth checking.

I would inspect the turn signal switch cable (flat cable that runs the length of the column). Sounds like it might have been damaged or pinched as you were working.

Check and see if the hazard switch is pushed in. I think "maybe" if its pushed in and the the hazard warning flasher is bad or the power to the flasher is interrupted it could cause this.

IF you have to check the Instrument cluster
Particularly check the area, in-between the cluster speed-o and Tach.
The area where column mount connects to the bird cage,
is known for very sharp edges, and the harness must carefully snake around this area,
common problem of wires rubbing and shorting out.

I did the same thing as Duke94. As soon as I reconnected the battery the four-ways began flashing. Since Bubba had already modified my dash harness, I decided to install both a dash and engine harness for safety reasons. When I put everything back, I used a short screw!

Well guys, you hit the nail on the head, or should I say screw. The screw was to long in the trim piece under the column. All is good now. Thanks again guys, this forum is the best.

Now I feel better, at least 3 of us made the same mistake.
