Default timing chain instalation question

im putting together a new engine for my 80 and the timing chain has 3 key slots for the crank gear.

im using a 1986 block with a one-piece rear seal, going back carburation like stock.

I know i dont want to retard the engine with this timing gear set,but is there an advantage on advancing it through this timing set?

like i said the engine came out of a 1986 corvette, and is stock with quadrajet carburation.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE killer454

Usually:
triangle is 4* cam advance: improved low-mid rpm performance.
circle/dot/zero is "straight-up": OEM performance.
square is 4* cam retard: improved mid-hi rpm performance.

Always:
You don't get something for nothing; everything's a tradeoff.

Don't discount either setup; each is valid for specific application.

With only the info provided ... I suggest install it straight up.

Seems that's an L98 motor.
those slots are "keyways".
the key is a "woodruff key".

with jackson.

Generally, today's cams have the appropriate advance ground in. Advancing or retarding is not rebuild 101 stuff - the big change is where in the RPM range the engine makes power, but there are a number of side effects as well. Pick the right cam and install it straight up

And PLEASE don't install it anyplace but straight up without checking piston to valve clearance. Unless you're 100% positive you have loads of clearance. One way makes the intake valves closer the other way does the exhaust.
