i need to order a new speedo cable and that clip/bolt that holds the able in the trans also. there are a few different lengths and upper/lower for the ables... i have no clue what i need

do you have cruise control?
if you have cruise control then you have two cables.....if you do not have cruise control then its one. i think the length of the cable is the same for auto and manuals
If you have cruise control that is where the upper and lower come onto play. If you don't have cruise you just need one long cable 68-77 lower cable. Any good local trans shop could help you with the bolt and retainer.
I'm in the same boat with my '77. It does have cruise control, but I don't want to use it. So if you want to bypass the cruise control, do you just need the long lower cable, 68-77???
I had cruise control in mine, took everything out, the transducer and all of the vacuum lines. I replaced the 2 piece cable with the single long one and it works perfectly.

Besides replacing both w/ the long cable, a 86-88 MC SS lower cable should connect to upper cable to bypass cruise transducer.
will do... i should ge it in a few days and might try to install it next weekend... right now just trying to find a speedo and tach then i should be good
the 4speed cable doesnt fit... unless i need an adapter or something. one end of the cable has inner threads but there's nothing on the trans to screw to. looks like it's a slip in place connection with the screw/clip just holding it in place...
searching for an auto cable now...... so i have a 4 speed cable for sale now
i'm thinking i might not have a vette trans or what ever is the typical... all the speedo cables i have seen have that threaded end...HELP
Both the manual and auto cables connect to the same size fitting on the trans. They both screw on. The auto trans cable is 72" long- I just bypassed the cruise on the 77 with it. I routed it the long way- from the trans, follow the crossmember to the frame and then tuck the cable up over the top of the frame running forward past the exhaust, turning up under the master cylinder and curling back thru the firewall to the speedo. Couple of zip ties and no worries about the cable getting to the exhaust heat.
onaqwst- they used 2 different tailshaft housings- one takes a small speedo adapter and the other takes a big one- both 350's. The small one is the most common. If you have a 350, it's got both a cable from the left side of the carb and a vacuum line that runs to the right rear of the trans. THE PAN IS NEARLY SQUARE, WITH ONE CORNER CUT OFF! A 400, there is a vacuum line that runs to the right side of the trans and ends just forward of center. An electric wire running down to the left side of the trans. The pan is rectangular, with a kickout on the right side.
