is it a clatter? my engine was making a clatter that would come and go with engine temperature and it turned out to be a burned out exhaust header gasket... also you can use a long screw driver as a probe and put your ear against it to listen at different points around the engine for the noise...
turns out the starter had some loose screws; the starter is "adjustable", meaning it can be rotated. took it apart and 2 small screws holding it together had come loose. tighted them up and put some high temp loctite on them. hopefully this wont happen again.
