Default need electrical help

i was reinstalling my alternator after some upgrades and the red wire came out of the plug in the alternator and sparked up. now nothing works. my battery was tested and is fine. i have power at the starter but nothing else. does any one know what would blow out when this happens. if it is a fusible link then where would that be located. i checked the fuse panel and everything looks ok. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks. by the way its a 76 corvette.

they look like small black or Red or Orange Tootsie Rolls with no twisty ends.

The actual fusible link is in between the tootsie rolls.
The tootsie rolls are the crimp connectors.

i found those by the starter, there is a thicker wire then the hard plastic cylinder(tootsie roll) then it goes to a thinner wire then the crimp. the thinner wires insulation is pealed and smells burnt but the wire is in tack. wouldnt the wire be fried if that was it?

Yes the wire should be burnt in 2 allowing you to stretch it. You should have 2 links at the starter. You can also check the 4 wire connector at the back of the right cylinder head. The connector has 2 red wires 1 purple and a black.....check the reds to see if they have power. The 2 reds are fed from the 2 fusible links so if the reds are hot the links are in tacked.

Oops I might have spoke too quick. One of your fusible links could be at the bulkhead connector just below the power brake booster.

sometimes the fuselink will break or burn inside the insulation and will appear good. pull on the link, if it is bad it will stretch.

ok so the fusible links weren't bad, did a continuity check on them when i replaced them and they were still good. any other ideas what the problem could be? the car actually came back to life for a moment, so i put everything back together and went to start it and it was dead again. so the last time i checked the fusible links and went to put the battery terminal on an i got sparks at the battery. i disconnected the alternator hooked up the battery and figured i would get sparks at the alternator but nothing. she is still dead. could it be a horn relay? if so is there a way to tell if its bad. need help. thanks
