I'm looking for a crate engine for my 1970 corvette.
I'm interested by a 355 or 383 with alloy heads from Blueprint : the Dressed 355/383 Budget Stomper and the Dressed 355/383 Alum.
It is a big gape for the price, but I don't understand what are the main and important differences.
I need your advices !
If some people use a blueprint engine, I also need your comments.
Thanks
Stephane
Look at the internals of anything you buy. A lot of the crate engine manufacturers don't list manufacturers or materials used (I.E. JUNK!). Some run flat tappet cams. If it don't say roller cam it isn't. This is a fully forged bottom end with Dart heads and a roller cam. This is the way I would go. If you send them your carb and dist it comes Dyno tuned and ready to drop in. Check out the torque! http://www.tandlengines.com/chevy_sb...m_408_a-1.html
I bought the vortec headed 355 with 385 hp and it is awesome! It has a great muscle car sound and plenty of power. If you do buy it you might want to change the oil pan because it hit my power steering cylinder. Other than that its a great motor and a good value!
I looked at blueprint engines stuff in the past and found out they are Marshall engines I believe... remanned engines and they havent had the greatest reviews. A lot of people went a few 100 miles and lost their engines, tried contacting BP only to find they where screwed over by them. I am still considering getting one its a toss up between their 383 440tq or 355 405tq or a Year one 350. Let me know how it works out for you.
Buy the 383 if you get the blueprint. Buy it from jegs, they are only $100 more than the base 355. I haven't got many miles on my motor because I am just getting everything finished up and plates and insurance tommorrow. Motor runs very strong and very good. Hopefully I don't have any problems. Being a college kid working a parttime job, I'm broke. Next project is a Model A sedan... I can feel the pain already.
That is their mildest 408 build. An L88 used a stock driveline. Sticky tires and that motor will damage components though. Only reason I recommended it is it is much better internal components, better power, not much price difference. Seen a lot of people put a new crate engine in and, a year later they are changing heads and or cam because they are not satisfied with the results. This is a one time upgrade make it the right choice for the long term. The bottom end is the foundation of any motor and heads make power. High quality internals and good heads would be my main priority on any crate engine purchase.
DO NOT BUY FROM T & L ENGINES I purchased 383 stroker in Nov of 2008 They said 3-5 weeks I finaaly got PART OF THE ENGINE in April 2009 NO carb,no clutch,no mini starter, and no money in return. Installed motor was taking it to body shop for paint and IT BLEW UP WITH LESS THAN 50 MILES.I NEVER EVEN GOT TO SPIN TIRES. Now they won't return calls and I have to sue them to try and recover my money. Don"t BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY SAY !!!!!!!!!!!
It may be worth it to check out some local engine builders. I would be afraid to buy a engine online unless it was from a major company.
Thats what I ended up doing as well. Found a local guy that builds Sprint Car and other race engines. He turned my 4bolt main target master into a nice 383-400hp for $3k.
I reviewed all the options, BluePrint, Year one GMPP. The only other option for me was a ZZ383 from GMPP but I decided to save the $2k on a car i drive for pleasure on sunny days.

Same here! I'll be getting about 400HP from my original 350 block, now a 383. About the same price too.

You need to call before 8.00 AM and talk to Lloyd directly. These guys are in the shop all day and the office is unmanned a lot. They have always been a reputable company and have a warrantee. The only complaints I have heard from anyone on them is it sometimes takes longer to build than the original estimate. A lot of things can delay a build like suppliers back orders and equipment breakdowns. They build a lot of Nascar and Busch motors so some times of the year are very busy for them and I am sure the race teams would have to come first. I know quite a few others that have had engines built by them and are extremely happy with them. Communicate with them.
