I want to paint my rocker panels silver. I tried lightly sanding them and applying primer (spray can). Didn't work so well. Sent them to powder coater - that didn't work so well either. Here's my new plan - rough sand & apply light coat of bondo, then send them to auto body for paint. Will this work ?
The anodized layer is a hard surface coating that gives the thin aluminum panel some stiffness and some rock/chip resistance. If you remove it, the panel will be pretty flimsy and get nicked up quickly. The factory painted them with no problem. I suggest a good primer on a lightly scuffed (Scotchbrite or wet/dry paper) surface, then follow with a durable paint or epoxy coating.
Thanks guys - I'll lightly sand them again & drop 'em off at an auto body shop for paint. While I'm at it, they can do the egg crates. I'm trying to go for that 'monochromatic' look.
A couple of years ago I was wanting to do something with my Rocker Panels as well. Everyone has them painted in some way. I like shiney!! I took the panels off and took them to a guy that does a lot with Stainless. He has been working with it for years I took the panels in and told him what I was wanting. He totally understood what I meant and when they were finished I couldn't believe it. He made covers that went over the rocker panels and they were made of surgical stainless. I have recieved many compliments on them but they were expensive and donot regret having done them at all.
