Hey guys I could use some advise on this. I have SBC with short style water pump, alternator, and power steering. No AC. Has anyone with this configuration converted to a serpentine belt system ? I have begun to look at the March Performance Pulleys system and the new one from Vintage Air but was wanting some input and specifics from one of you guys with experience. Thanks in advance.
This doesn't help directly. But, I bought the March stuff for my project engine. It wasn't cheap, but everything fit perfectly and everything was complete. It looks great and works great. I know in some prior posts a few had some complaints regarding March. My experience was different.
The main reason I want to do it is so I don't have to climb under the car to tighten the power steering belt, and so I don't have to remove the alternator bracket or alternator to put in power steering fluid on my big block. Also, getting all the belts to the right tension is a pain in the neck when there are four adjustments. With a serpentine system with spring loaded idler, belt tensioning is a thing of the past, and changing belts is quick and easy. I could care less about looks on mine, it is purely for utility. I am collecting pulleys (I have the water pump, PS pump, and alternator now) to build my own serpentine system.
You can get V-belt or serpentine from March, they are now making a kit specifically for 71-82 Corvettes in V-belt that comes with WP, Crank, and Alt pulleys. Summit and Jegs sell them all. Also try this place, http://www.hotrodlane.cc/ I already have the pulleys and I'll be buying the billet brackets from there. You'll have to call for a catalog, don't let the low budget web site fool you.
I think there are plenty of advantages. No more mis-alignment, only one belt to change, and running 3 inches of belts can't be good for HP. I've got the budget set-up and it works fine. March pulleys are great and look outstanding, but I can't see spending that kind of money on pulleys for a 300 hp motor. 500hp would be another story. Send me a email if you want pics. Are if someone wants to host them I will send them a complete set of top, bottom, and side shots.
Hey Budman
I want them pics and any other info you can give such as where you got them and what you got them off of . Might be able to go to an old junkyard and get what I need if I only knew what I was looking for. Drop me a line at jackback4@home.com
If anyone is interested March Tech Support got back with me and recommended this complete kit with Alt bracket, PS bracket, and pullies for a summitracing price of $524.00 part number 20-450 here is the link: http://www.marchperf.com/pg13.html
