I might be off a little , but this is basically the idea;
FLAT TAPPET lifters are a round cylinder/cigar shaped item ( approx 2 inches long) that rides up and down on the lobes of the cam as it spins, the bottom of the lifter is flat and polished and the top of the lifter has an indent in it for the pushrod to seat into it. the pushrods are hollow and the lifter also has a second job of pumping oil thru the rod to the rocker arms.
the pushrod pushes on one end of a rocker arm ( sorta like a teeter-totter)
and the other end of the rocker arm pushes dwon on the valve to open and close it.
ROLLER lifters have a wheel on the bottom that rides on the cam lobe, this allows for somewhat less rolling resistance and allows for a more aggressive lobe to snap the valve open faster. (the more the valve stays open, the better the fuel mixture gets into the engine...more power) a roller cam just has more aggressive lobes and should only be used with roller lifters. sorry to ramble on, just wanted to cover a lot of bases in one reply
