Default tranny / clutch replacement, help please!

'68 corvette, 327, Muncie 4 speed: I pulled the tranny to replace the clutch, with a standard LUK clutch kit. Everything is reinstalled, but the linkage isn't shifting properly. I can get it to shift between 1-2-3-4, but not into reverse. After tinkering, it went to reverse but then wouldn't go back to any of the forward gears. It seems to slip in and out of reverse without pulling up on the T handle. It shifted fine before I started. Any ideas on what I forgot and how to fix? Obviously this is the first time I've taken a transmission out, so I'm learning as I go. Any help will be appreciated.

Did you put the outside arms in the correct orientation? They will go on pointing up or down. Up is correct.

I think so. 1-2 and 3-4 arms are assembled on from the top. Reverse is attached from the bottom. I questioned myself on this and looked at the pic in my '68 cheverolet chassis manual. It seemed correct. Hopefully I understood and answered your question correctly.

If they are up,then all is well there. When everything is in the neutral position under the car make sure the alignment sites line up.Also, look into finding another spring in the shifter handle itself.Unscrew the boll from the top,and pull the reverse lockout, and the spring is there. You probably had the ball off during the removal.....did you forget the spring????
Did you get this car off ebay awhile back?I think this is one I was checking out.Cool car!!!!!

Yes, this car was for sale on ebay and also locally in Chicago. I drove over and checked it out, and bought it. Thanks, I think it is a really cool car too! I also used to live in Odessa, worked there for a year or two on oil wells.
Anyway, yes, when disassembled there is a spring that stayed in the ball, so I left it there, and when reassembled, it is still in the ball and I assume fits over the thin rod. Is that correct, or do I need to take the spring out of the ball and install it elsewhere?

Should look like this (unless 68' is different), then screw the ball on.

OK, almost got this one. All is back together, and I need to make a few minor adjustments to the shift linkage, but I'm about done. For future reference anybody who reads this thread..... Some of the posts suggest using a 1/4" drill bit to align the linkage. In this case, for my stock '68, there are half circle cut-outs in the housing, but none in the levers inside, so the manual has to be followed using the "locating gauge". I just made one from a feeler guage, others suggest a putty knife. Now that I'm done, I would suggest to others if you have to take the shift linkage out of the car, to do this out of the car before you install and then you'll know what you are doing once it is hard to reach. Also, I can see how it might be helpful to scribe a line across the bottom of the levers so when it is re-installed you have another positive way to assist with the line-up by sight. Thank you to the forum members and previous posts for the help!
