Ok, this is a question about my dad's car. I'm not too up on the ignition system on his car, so I'll do my best.
The car is a 350/300 with TRW 11:1 pistions and basically everything else stock. It has new Blue Streak points and condenser, dwell set at 30 (we've tried it everywhere else, too), vacuum advance works, mechanical advance works, plugs are good, new carb baseplate gaskets, all newer vacuum lines, and the coil is about 5 years old, but doesn't have many miles. Timing is at 8*.
The problem is that the car will not rev past 3200 in any gear (4 speed). It pulls strong right until 3200 and then pegs like it has a rev limiter on it.
Anybody got any ideas? The car is pristine other than this problem and we've been fighting it for a while. Any help appreciated.
i would check the carb linkage for binding, mabe the carb is not opening up all the way.check carb and excelerator cable for proper movement.
could be starving for fuel, check fuel pressure.
could also be the float in the carb not set right,or messedup not letting the right amount of fuel into the carb.but i would think it would loose powerat 3200 rpms if this was it.
some inline filter have an arrow for direction dont know if this would be the problem but i would check if my car.
does the engine run good at 3200 rpms,if it does cant see it being a major problem?
the onlything that stands out that this could really be is the carb linkage stoping and not openingup the carb all the way.
this is what i would check first.all the other symptoms above this one would show a powerloss at 3200 rpms(moter would die out and not rev no further same with ignition would hear cutting out missing.
i guess the info we need is how does engine act at 3200rpms?
Any strange noises? I'm wondering about weak or broken vavle springs, just something to check.
No strange noises. It's got all new (5k miles) valves, lifters, etc.
The motor hits 3200, sputters, and goes no higher.
I don't think the problem is with the linkage, but I'll double check.
I think that it's either the coil or the fuel pump, but I'd rather not replace both to find out. Is there any way to tell which one it would be without replacing both of them?
One time I had a similar issue with a worn distributor shaft/bearing. I guess the points weren't opening/closing at higher rpm due to the shaft wobble.
