If I turn corners with my turn signals on and they don't turn off, is this a big problem to fix? I have a 1973 coupe. I haven't had my Vette too long and I'm fixing things slowly as they get on my nerves. This forum has already helped me out a great deal and I appreciate all of the advise.
This issue is one that is getting on my nerves because I hate when I find out that I was driving for some distance with my turn signal still on. I'm 6'3" and the way I have the steering wheel, I can't really see the signal lights on the dash. I would like it if the signal would automatically turn off. I assume that it was designed that way and is somehow broken.
More than likely the problem is the turn signal switch. There are ears on the switch that get tripped when the wheel free spins back after your turn. When these ears get worn or break the switch will quite cancelling out.
Jim Shea has some great articles posted here that will show you how to replace the switch. It’s not that hard, but can intimidate people real easy.
Actually the 1973 switches had two small circular springs that engaged your cancelling cam to kick the switch back to a neutral position.
The springs sometimes get dislodged. Also I think that most automotive stores has a repair kit with the circular springs. Complete turn signal switches (both T&T and Standard) are also available.
You can find papers to help you disassemble and repair the standard steering column as well as the T&T.
