jkmhb,
Those gears were available from GM (over the counter) i know because i got stuck with a NOS set a couple of years. BTW i sent you an e-mail about a trans yoke, did you get it?? ....redvetracr
I looked and looked for a couple years. As I said in an earlier post, I came close a few times, i.e. "Had a set sitting on the shelf for years, sold it last week", etc. Came across one set; but was very, very used. Even the 3.08's I finally got through Summit took nearly a year before they were shipped from Richmond. I talked to Richmond regularly asking them when they would have enough orders to make more. It was a long, long wait!
The 3.08's really are the best compromise with the Richmond 5 speed. The only alternative is going the 6 speed route as I did.
I have the original 2.73s(12 bolt rear end) from my 69 stored in my garage. I had a trans/rear end shop look at them & they said they're in good shape. Email me if you're still interested in running that ratio. I'm pretty sure somebody awhile back said that Richmond Gears makes these also.
2.73 ratio is extremely rare from GM, and WAS not made by anyone else...some years ago....
Florida Caliper I THINK is the folks who used to have some 2.73 gearsets....
GM original....
to me....i'ts no substitute for overdrive....
in MY case going from 3.36 to 2.73 would give me only 20% engine speed reduction...from 4 grand cruise to 3200,....not worth it...cost wise...
but with a 30% reduction...well that ~.70 o/d ratio....
it's more in the realm....so I went the cheapest o/drive available at the time...700r4, been happy....
maybe a 200r4 would have been good also....
Florida Caliper is where I got a set of very used AND CHIPPED gears; but never got a refund. I also bought a set of their high end Zero Tolerance brake calipers that turned out to be only nicely painted core returns badly scored inside!!!! A few of the bores had stainless steel insert in them, but looked to be installed with a ball peen hammer. I returned them, they were repackaged and simply sent back to me! All tolled, I lost nearly $700 from Carl at Florida Calipers
