'71 steering gear replacement
What is the best steering gear for this application? I plan on replacing the rag joint at the same time.

What do you mean by steering gear if you mean the steering box Flaming river makes one or you can rebuild your stock one.

I am getting ready to replace my steering box also and found a reman one 235.00.

I suggest you do some homework before you buy a box. A stock box, rebuilt correctly, will be about all a street car needs. Good luck

Out of curiosity, how much "play" to either side of neutral would the steering wheel have with a new/rebuilt box?

Yes I have PS. I am considering the Borgeson conversion box. Kind of expensive but forum members that have it like it.

Depends on the system, PS or manual and on how the box was built. For example a $100-$150 ebay special isn't all that special.
