Hi all, having a little bit of u joint woes. Been having a shake in the vette last while so I pulled my driveshaft. The front u joint which I installed bout 2K ago was loose in the yoke. The rear is fine. One strap looks slightly out of shape (which was likely that way when I installed it) so I bought some new straps.
Just to make sure the parts guys have given me the proper u joints can someone tell me the Spicer u joint number for the driveshaft yoke and are they both same number on the driveshaft.

Thanks
If not, it will be worth it in the long run to GET the Spicer U-joints. Professionally speaking. You can't go wrong using Spicer. And whatever you do...DO NOT install any with zerk (grease) fititngs if you choose not to install Spicer. Which would be a mistake. BUT i'm sure others will beg to differ.

Just to add my present u joint fits the driveshaft fine but has about 1/16" play side to side in the yoke. Anyone know where specs on the yoke can be found. The one I have is origional and so is the driveshaft.
Thanks
I hoped you marked your driveshaft / yoke position. If you have removed your yoke from the driveshaft and didn't mark it, it may need re-balancing or you may have to rotate it 180 degrees if when you drive it ...IF it shakes or shutters. And what ever you do, make sure that you keep the front of the driveshaft at the front.
If you post your measurements of the U-joint, I (we) can tell you what part number to get. But the Spicer 5-790x should be it ...like what was earlier posted.
Measure the diameter of the cap.
Measure the length. Make sure it is compressed.
Then measure the yoke, Measure the inside of the two raised notches that are cast into the yoke, where the caps rest.
Does your U-joint caps fit snugly against the clips that are installed in the end of the driveshaftwhere it is pressed into place? or is there a gap between the caps and clip(s)
You may have a bad/worn yoke.
Good detailed photo's would be great of your problem area.

I need to get a new u-joint for my driveshaft (and maybe a new yoke while I'm at it) and have been looking at Denny's. I have greasable now, but is it recommended to get the ones without the zerk fittings? They offer both, so not sure what I should go with. I have a '71 4-speed that I'm putting a zz454 in (just waiting on the u-joint thing since I'd rather do it right now while everything's out). Thanks!
