Default 1977 wiring issue

i got a 1977 vett and ina drivethrew running the car just went off, no power anywhere. pushed it back and started to look for what happened. the battery is ok the starter wires ok. there was no indacation of this going to happen, it just went dead of power. the lights were on and all out. left the lights switch on. was looking and not touching nothing and all of a sudden the lighis were on, i walked to the drivers seat and turned the key and it started. turned it off and eat and then tried it latten and nothing. mad a wire from the battery positive post to the big red wire in the back of the fuse panel under my feet and i had lights and i turned the key to see if it would start and it did. thought i would have to hold the wire on but i didn't removed the wire and it still ran. i hurried and drove home, and shut it off and there i am again with no power. i need wiring diagrams to see what the heck is up with this. i did put a new alternator on it that same day too but it looks ok. help me ps the battery cables ok bolted to ground ok. help john

Just to the right of the distributor on the firewall there's a connector in a harness that runs down to the starter. All the power for the car runs thru it. The fuse links are in that harness- it's called "starter extension harness" in the vendors catalogs. Could be that connector is dirty or partially unplugged. I'd start there.

You can also check your power from the fusible links at this connector.
Here is a pic of the connector location(this is a 6 wire).
