How much oil is required for a new (Bone Dry) engine?
383 flat tappet Comp Cam
I already have the Rotella T with CI-4 Plus, but then read that they no longer are putting enough of the good stuff in there so I am going to get some ZDDP Plus as well.
I just want to make sure that it is not over filled.
Put 4 qt's in the pan, and fill up the oil filter with the 5th qt, and put whatever is left in the pan. Then prime the engine making sure you get oil out of all the rocker arms, rotating the engine over several times while priming. Let it drain for a while and check the oil. if its on the dipstick fill it till it gets to the full mark.
You need to find out what size oil pan you have. If it is a larger pan, like a Moroso unit, you could need more than 5qts. I agree with filling the filter with the last quart!!
A little Old School: Many old time engine builders added a sixth quart of oil to insure the cam was sufficiently oiled during initial cam break in.
After 20 minutes or so of running at 2000 RPM the sixth quart was removed for the remainder of break in. I have done it this way several times, haven't lost a cam yet.
All good advice,it is also a good idea to dump the oil and replace the filter after the initial cam run in to get any excess assy lubes and metal fragments out of the engine.

with priming the engine as stated.
Here is where you may have some problems.....
DID you replace the oil pan with another which may be deeper? Thus more oil may be needed.
DID you replace the oil dipstick with an aftermarket unit from a parts house? MANY times the marks are NOT CORRECT. And using those marks on the dipstick can cause you PROBLEMS. Becasue the tube that you insert into the block is a different length and the indicator is different also. I have been "bit" by this many times when customers what a nice chrome dipstick and I can show them that it is a piece of ....! It requires modification so the marks on the stick are correct in relation to the oil level.
Just thought I would mention it...if you had replaced these parts...even though you did not mention it in your post.
