I believe that you can take two [of the three] mounting bolts out of the steering box and tilt it forward to get the necessary clearance. Put one half of the ragjoint on each of the shafts, then bolt them together when you re-mount the steering box. Make certain that the proper alignment of the steering system components (column shaft, steering box shaft, and ragjoint components before you put it all together. Note: the two bolts in the ragjoint are different, so keep their orientation correct once you separate it.
Tim.....Charley is right. You can install the new rag joint by loosening the steering box. Be sure your steering wheel and the rag joint are correctly oriented when you re-install the joint.
I replaced the ragjoint by pulling the steering wheel from the joint.
There are 2 keeper plates that hold the steering wheel column in place:
1. Fire wall engine side
2. Under the dash , behind the dash cover plate.
Just be careful not to pull it too far, as there are wires attached to it.
It is rather heavy, but I layed the steering wheel on the seat for support.
Note the orientation of the rag joint connections to the colmun and gear box.
There are flats on each end, but this will not prevent you from installing it at the improper angle.
The ragjoint and the steering box bolts are accessible from under the left wheelwell. You can get better access if you remove the left-front wheel first.
