I went to replace the shocks on an 81 all was going good but the lower shock mount on passenger side was not moving. I hooked up the 800lb torque impact and you guessed it, twisted off the stud. Just a note to others, just because you have a big a$$ impact sometimes finess is better than brawn. Allan
The challenge is going to be getting the rest of the mount out without wrecking everything it is connected to. Take your time and use plenty of penetrating lubricant or you will be looking at a complete rear suspension rebuild before you know it.
I saw Muskegon Brake has the piece for $50 and a special tool for removing the mount. Has anyone ever used such a tool? Al
Willcox is $18 less, and I believe the tool you are talking about has to thread onto the mount after the nut has been removed. I was under the impression that you broke the shaft off while trying to remove the nut. If you still have threads you can buy a pipe cap at a home supply store for a few $ that will do what the special tool will. The cap/tool allows you to hammer on the mount to loosen it. You may still destroy the threads on the mount even with the tool. This is unfortunately one of the more curse-word worthy jobs that you can do on a Vette.
yes the mount is twisted flush with the solid shaft, no threads at all. I guess the tool would be worthless. A little heat might help out the situation. Al

If the end is broken off the spindle, I think I would use a saws all and cut it out between both sides of the support. Once you have the center out you should be able to wiggle the side with the splines out.
I say this because the last thing you want to do is break the spindle support. If you hammer with a chisel and miss you could break off one of the ears. It’s possible to do it with a hammer and if you choose to do so, just be careful.
You can use a torch to cut out the bolt but you’ll need to keep the support cool if you do this. Unless you can write your name with a torch I would not try this!
