Default '81 Clutch Operation Question

The pedal travel requires a bit more effort after driving a few minutes. Taking off from a stop and the release is not smooth....almost like it catches or hangs-up. With engine off pressing the clutch yields a few sounds...creaks and groans. With the linkage disconnected from the clutch arm...all is fine.

So I am guessing that the problem is the pressure plate? Also I am beginning to hear the throw-out bearing whine while driving. Putting pressure on the clutch pedal stops the noise.

This clutch has about 1000 to 1200 miles on it, its a Valeo stock replacement clutch. Thought this would have lasted alot longer than this.

Lots of possibles.
Throw out arm cracked, bell housing cracked, T/O bearing bad, z-bar is worn where it pivots on the block, frame side pivot loose, pressure plate bad, Throwout arm pivot spring broken, retainer for the throwout bearing broken. Maybe it just needs some lube. Long list, but trying pin it down exactly is tough. I'd look at all the linkage first, from the pedal bushings on down to the bellhousing before I ripped the clutch out.

TimAt....thanks for the list...had forgotten about two possibilities. Pretty sure the pedal bushing is fine, but will need to check everything before I even think about dropping the trans AGAIN!

Maybe all it needs is a spot of grease on the pivot ball.....yeah right

Updated info: noise sounds like a spring binding or something from the pedal. Going to take a look-see tonight....any particular area I should pay close attention to?

Took all the tension out of the clutch linkage and wiggled the throw-out bearing around....re adjusted the linkage....all is fine. Smooth easy coperation.

So I am guessing that the tangs on the clutch arm to the throw-out bearing were a bit off or something.

Anyways, all is good.

Thanks for the replies. And yes I will keep an eye on it..as it could be something else that caused this.
