Can having a different lead affest the reading off of the sending unit? My 70 has a pin style top off the sending unit and the wire out of my harness has the square female (56 series) that I have stuck on (apparently someone in the past fiddled with it). It holds, but my readings are still off. Could that be an issue, or is a terminal a terminal as long as it touches and stays on? I see lectric limited sells the pin grip/sleeve terminal that goes with my unit. I'm just trying not to waste money if that dosent matter, but all else seems to not be working.
Having a different lead tells me you have the wrong sending unit. I can tell you from experience you need the gauge and sending unit matched. The sending units/gauges varied over the years, and if you don't have a matched pair, you will get incorrect temp readings.
When I put aluminum heads on my engine, the threaded hole for the temp sending unit was too small for the one for the car, so I bought one to fit the heads. In addition to having the wrong resistance, the terminal was wrong, a flat spade instead of the round pin like the original and the wire in the car. I modified the terminal to fit the sending unit, but the gauge always read too low. After researching different sending units, I gave up on that idea and just mounted the correct sending unit in the intake manifold.
